Mr. Michael Smith

Michael H. Smith began his journey in Florence, South Carolina, earning a BA in history from Erskine College in 1993. He pursued his legal education at the University of Georgia School of Law, graduating in 1996. Michael launched his legal career in Augusta, Georgia before relocating to Savannah in 1997, drawn by the coastal lifestyle.

In November 2006, Michael co-founded Smith Barid, LLC with Richard Barid. The firm focuses on estate planning, elder law, and special needs planning. Michael's expertise in these areas earned him the distinction of Georgia Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2010, reflecting his peers' respect.

Michael's leadership extends beyond his practice. In 2009, he was honored as a 40 Under 40 business leader by The Business Report and Journal. He maintains a 10.0 Superb rating on Avvo.com. His professional affiliations include Wealth Counsel, Elder Counsel, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and more. He also contributes to the Savannah Bar Association and the Savannah Estate Planning Council.

Dedicated to community service, Michael participated in the Alzheimer’s Association of Coastal Georgia’s Dancing Stars fundraiser in 2012, performing a Carolina Shag to support Alzheimer's awareness. Outside his legal work, he is a proud father of three and a nationally licensed soccer coach. Michael is actively involved with the Greater Savannah Sports Council and the Coastal Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
