Babak Akhlaghi

Babak Akhlaghi leads NovoTech Patent Firm in Washington, D.C., providing comprehensive patent services to clients both domestically and internationally. As a registered patent counsel, he brings extensive expertise to the firm. Babak co-authored the annually updated Patent Applications Handbook by West Publications, a key resource for industry professionals. Additionally, he contributes to academia as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, where he teaches courses focused on the intersection of entrepreneurship and intellectual property law.

His practice areas include patent preparation and prosecution in electrical engineering and computer science, with a focus on emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning, medical devices, semiconductors, and mobile applications. Babak also provides strategic advice on licensing, validity, enforceability, infringement, and patent reexaminations.

Before his current role, Babak was a Partner at McDermott Will & Emery and an Associate at Fish & Richardson in Washington, D.C. He gained international experience as in-house counsel at Panasonic Corporation in Osaka, Japan, and has offered pro bono legal services at the Landlord-Tenant Resource Center in D.C. His technical background includes work as a radio frequency technician.

Babak holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, where he graduated at the top of his class. During law school, he was an article editor for the Houston Business & Tax Law Journal. He is admitted to practice in Maryland, D.C., and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
