James's legal journey began at the University of Iowa College of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctorate with distinction in 1995. His career as a twenty-two-year automobile dealer operator, managing franchises such as Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo, equips him with a robust business acumen that benefits his business clients.

In addition to his legal practice, James has contributed to his community through service on numerous boards, including the Cedar Rapids Opera Board, State Board of Regents, and various bank boards. His involvement with The Berthel Fisher Company further reflects his commitment to community and business leadership.
