Matthew B. Smith

Matthew B. Smith is an associate attorney based in the Baton Rouge office of Kean Miller. Joining the firm in 2013, he specializes in commercial litigation, toxic tort defense, and environmental litigation. Matthew adeptly represents oil and gas exploration and production companies, as well as mid-stream and other industry companies, in a variety of litigation matters, including property damage, contamination, property rights, and commercial disputes.

Matthew’s expertise extends to guiding clients through claims involving soil and groundwater contamination, air pollution, and navigating the associated regulatory standards. His practice encompasses a broad spectrum of commercial and litigation issues, from contract negotiation to managing complex litigation and discovery processes.

Matthew graduated with a B.A., summa cum laude, from Louisiana State University in 2009. He then earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the LSU Law Center in 2013, where he was a member of the Moot Court Board and the Order of the Coif. Recognized for his academic excellence, Matthew was named to the Chancellor's List, was a Paul M. Hebert Scholar, and received CALI awards for the highest grades in Advanced Mineral Law, Louisiana Law of Obligations (Contracts), Statutory & Constitutional Interpretation, Business Associations I, and Accounting for Lawyers.

While at LSU Law, Matthew served as a research assistant to Professor John Randall Trahan, contributing to developments in Louisiana property, sales, and lease law, and assisting in drafting the Precis on Louisiana Law of Property.
