Richard Phillips

Flip Phillips, a founding partner of Smith, Phillips, Mitchell, Scott & Nowak, LLP, is a distinguished attorney based in Hernando, Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he was President of the Law School Student Body and a member of the Mississippi Law Journal.

For more than four decades, Flip has represented plaintiffs and insurance policyholders across the United States. His landmark cases have been instrumental in abolishing sovereign immunity and defining automobile insurance regulations in Mississippi. Additionally, his work has expanded the application of punitive and extra-contractual damages in insurance regulation and contract enforcement nationwide.

Flip has held significant roles as Lead Class Counsel, Co-Lead Counsel, and a member of the Plaintiffs' Steering Committees in national class actions and Multi-District Litigation. These cases have addressed issues such as deceptive sales practices in life insurance, interest crediting practices, supplemental health insurance, cancer insurance, institutional investment and financial products, and personal injury/defective products cases. His multi-million dollar jury verdicts have been recognized among the National Law Journal's "Top 100" verdicts, as well as in the Wall Street Journal, LawyersUSA, and the Canadian Press.

An accomplished author and lecturer, Flip has presented papers nationwide for organizations including ALI-ABA, ACI, American Inns of Court, and various Bar Associations. His lectures have also reached professional groups like the National Association of Consumer Advocates (NACA) and the Defense Research Institute (DRI).

Born in 1947, Flip is a native of North Mississippi. He and his wife, Vera, who is also a University of Mississippi graduate, have three children and five grandchildren.
