About Jay Hughes
Jay Hughes, the founding partner of Hughes Brown, PLLC, has built a distinguished legal career in Oxford, Mississippi. Raised in South Louisiana, Jay served as an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army before earning his degree from Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. In 1988, he moved to Oxford to attend law school, where he received his law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1991. During his studies, Jay spent a semester at Downing College, Cambridge University in England. He married his college sweetheart, Cris, and they have made Oxford their home.
Jay is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Fifth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeal, and state and federal courts in Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, and New Mexico. His legal expertise primarily encompasses real estate closings, business, and banking matters in North Mississippi.
In addition to his practice, Jay has taught continuing legal education courses on real estate and estate planning. He is a regular lecturer at the Trent Lott Leadership Institute. Despite his experience in complex litigation, Jay's focus remains on his primary practice areas.
Jay and his wife, Cris, have been married for over 25 years and have one daughter. They are actively involved in public education, earning the Citizen of the Year award in 2012 from the Oxford School District. Jay has also served on the Board of the Whirlpool Foundation Sons & Daughters Scholarship, as a former Alderman in Oxford, and as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives.
