Babak Akhlaghi

Babak Akhlaghi serves as the Managing Director of NovoTech Patent Firm based in Washington, D.C., where he provides comprehensive patent services to clients both in the United States and internationally. With his extensive knowledge, he co-authors the Patent Applications Handbook, an annually updated resource published by West Publications. Babak also shares his expertise as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, teaching courses on the legal aspects of entrepreneurship with a focus on intellectual property and patents.

His practice encompasses patent preparation and prosecution in fields such as electrical engineering and computer science, covering technologies like AI, machine learning, medical devices, semiconductors, and mobile applications. Babak offers clients strategic advice on licensing, validity, enforceability, infringement, and patent reexaminations.

In his earlier career, Babak was a Partner at McDermott Will & Emery and an Associate at Fish & Richardson, both located in Washington, D.C. He also gained valuable experience as in-house counsel at Panasonic Corporation in Osaka, Japan, and provided pro bono legal assistance at the Landlord-Tenant Resource Center in D.C. His technical background includes work as a radio frequency technician.

Babak graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, where he was top of his class. During law school, he served as an article editor for the Houston Business & Tax Law Journal. He is admitted to practice in Maryland, D.C., and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
