About Gary Cash

Gary Cash is a seasoned legal professional with more than 35 years of experience. He spent 25 years as a North Carolina District Court Judge, culminating in his role as Buncombe County's Chief District Court Judge, which he held from 2002. He now operates a private mediation and arbitration practice in Asheville, North Carolina.

Before his judicial career, Gary practiced as a general attorney in Asheville. His academic journey began at Davidson College, where he was an International Rotary Scholar at the University of Meunster in West Germany. After graduating from Davidson in 1971, he became a Rockefeller Fellow at Yale University Divinity School and later earned his J.D. from the UNC School of Law in 1976.

Gary is deeply engaged in community service and has held several leadership roles, including President of the Conference of Chief District Court Judges and the N.C. Association of District Court Judges. He also chaired the N.C. Custody Mediation Advisory Committee. In 2014, he was appointed by N.C. Supreme Court Justice Mark Martin to a two-year term as Chair of the N.C. Dispute Resolution Commission.
