Billie J. Guthrie

Billie J. Guthrie brings over two decades of experience in advocating for social justice, beginning her career as a social worker before transitioning to law. With a master’s degree in social work from the University of North Carolina, Billie initially focused on mental health, serving as an administrator and policy advocate. Her work aimed at enacting legal and systemic reforms to benefit disabled adults and those facing persistent mental health issues and homelessness.

As a compassionate attorney, Billie assists clients in navigating the complexities of the Social Security Disability system. Her empathetic approach and ability to connect with clients ensure she presents their cases effectively for optimal outcomes.

Billie, originally from Blacksburg, Virginia, earned her law degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2011, where she participated in the Pro-Bono Law Program and Veterans Law Clinic. She also studied international law at Pepperdine Caruso School of Law in London. Her academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in social work from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree in social work from UNC.

Her legal career includes roles at Carolina Disability Advocates in Durham and as a contract attorney for KARAMAH: Muslim Women Attorneys for Human Rights in Washington, D.C. Additionally, she has served as a legal consultant for Stop Hunger Now in Raleigh.

Billie is actively involved in her community, serving as president of the board of directors of Threshold, a psychiatric rehabilitation program in Durham. She participates in the Durham, Orange, and Wake County SOAR committees, focusing on enhancing access to resources such as disability benefits for the homeless. She is also a member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, contributing to the executive committee of the Disability Section.
