Babak Akhlaghi

Babak Akhlaghi leads the NovoTech Patent Office in Washington, D.C., where he excels in providing comprehensive patent services across the United States and internationally. As a registered patent attorney, he is also known for co-authoring the Patent Applications Handbook, a respected resource published annually by West Publications.

In addition to his practice, Babak serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, instructing courses on the courtroom aspects of entrepreneurship with a particular focus on intellectual property and patents. His expertise encompasses patent preparation and prosecution in fields like electrical engineering and computer science, covering technologies such as AI, machine learning, medical devices, semiconductors, and mobile applications. His advisory role extends to assisting clients with licensing, validity, enforceability, infringement, and patent reexaminations.

Babak's career includes significant roles as a Partner at McDermott Will & Emery and an Associate at Fish & Richardson in Washington, D.C. He has also served as in-house counsel at Panasonic Corporation in Osaka, Japan, and offered pro bono legal assistance at the Landlord-Tenant Resource Center in D.C. His technical background as a radio frequency technician complements his legal expertise.

Babak earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, graduating at the top of his class, and contributed as an article editor for the Houston Business & Tax Law Journal during his law school tenure. He is admitted to practice in Maryland, D.C., and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
