About Catherine Christophillis
Catherine Christophillis embarked on her legal journey 38 years ago after earning her juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina Law School. Joining our firm in 2016, she has dedicated her practice to family law, addressing issues such as divorce, separation, child custody, child support, alimony, and the preparation of wills and powers of attorney. Catherine is also a certified mediator/arbitrator and a Guardian ad Litem, having received her training in Atlanta, GA in 1993, before mediation was approved in South Carolina.
Catherine played a pivotal role in drafting mediation rules in South Carolina and remains a strong advocate for mediation as an effective means of resolving family disputes. Her early career saw her practicing with Culbertson, Christophillis, and Sauvain, both before and after her tenure with the 13th Circuit Solicitors. During her time with the Solicitors, she led a special unit focused on crimes against children and domestic violence, and she initiated the Domestic Violence Intervention Project and the Response and Review Team for drug-exposed infants.
In 1995, Catherine joined the Attorney General’s office, where she served for five years, establishing and leading three specialized prosecution units: Directors of Insurance Fraud, Drug Prosecution, and Elder Abuse. Her contributions to legal literature include six published works, notably authoring the “Homicide by Child Abuse” legislation signed by Governor Carroll Campbell in 1992, and contributing to the children’s section of “The Right of Children to be Free from Harm” in South Carolina Jurisprudence. She also drafted amendments to the Insurance Fraud Act and co-authored the Child Fatalities Legislation and the Child Abuse Reform Act of 1996.
