About Lauralyn Cabanilla
Lauralyn Cabanilla began her academic journey at Brigham Young University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in English in 1986. To support her education and fulfill her patriotic duty, she joined the U.S. Army Reserve, becoming the sole female cadet at that time. She later graduated from BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School in 1994.
Her professional career commenced at the Utah County Attorney’s Office, where she gained significant experience prosecuting high-profile criminal cases. In 2000, she transitioned to the law firm now known as Esplin|Weight, where she is a partner. Her legal practice focuses on family law, criminal defense, and personal injury, including children's advocacy cases.
In 2010, Lauralyn was deployed to the Middle East, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Stationed at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, she frequently traveled to Iraq and Bahrain. She retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in January 2012, concluding over 30 years of distinguished service.
Beyond her legal and military careers, Lauralyn recently served a four-year term on the Provo City Council, contributing to the revitalization of Provo’s downtown area. She is married to Dave Cabanilla, a Federal Express pilot and local land developer, and they have four children, including triplets, and six grandchildren.
