James H. Shoemaker Jr.

James H. Shoemaker Jr., known as Jamie, joined Patten, Wornom, Hatten & Diamonstein ("PWHD") as an associate in 1993, following two years with a prominent Norfolk firm. He advanced to partner by 1996, focusing on employment law, False Claims Act (whistleblower), and Fair Labor Standards Act (overtime) litigation.

Jamie has tried over seventy cases to verdict in both state and federal courts, as well as before arbitration panels and Administrative Law Judges. His expertise extends to successfully resolving numerous cases through settlement and mediation. Notably, he has significant experience in litigating False Claims Act whistleblower cases.

As lead or co-lead counsel, Jamie has handled several FCA qui tam cases involving healthcare fraud and fraud against the Department of Defense. His efforts have led to government intervention in many instances. Among his notable achievements, he represented a client in the 2009 $2.1 billion recovery against Pfizer, one of the largest qui tam settlements in U.S. history.

Since 2006, Jamie has been featured in Best Lawyers in America, a testament to his standing among top practitioners. Virginia Business Magazine has consistently named him to its "Virginia Legal Elite" for the past decade. In 2005, he received the Courageous Advocate Award from the National Employment Lawyers Association in Manhattan.
