John Baker

John Baker, an accomplished attorney at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, began his tenure with the firm in early 2018. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, he completed his education at Norfolk Collegiate School before attending Hampden-Sydney College. There, he excelled as a Venable Scholar and graduated cum laude in 2006. During his time at Hampden-Sydney, John was actively involved in student governance, representing his class in the Student Senate and serving as its chairman in his senior year. He was also honored with the James Madison Public Service Certificate and was a member of the Society of 1791, the college’s leadership organization.

John furthered his education at the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi and graduated cum laude in 2010. It was at Ole Miss that he met his wife, Kate, who is also an attorney and works as a lobbyist for the Virginia Retail Federation.

After passing the bar in 2010, John spent seven years at a local insurance defense firm, representing numerous insurance companies across the Commonwealth of Virginia. His legal acumen has been recognized consistently since 2015, with selections as a Rising Star by Virginia Super Lawyers, and he was acknowledged as a 2022 Top Lawyer by Coastal Virginia Magazine and CoVaBIZ.

John is a former member of the James Kent American Inn of Court and, along with his colleagues, regularly conducts continuing legal education (CLE) courses focusing on civil litigation and personal injury practice.

Committed to his community, John has been actively involved in Hampton Roads. He served as President of the Virginia Club from 2020 to 2022, attends Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and is a member of the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Virginia. He also contributed to the Norfolk Collegiate Alumni Board from 2011 to 2016. Outside of his professional commitments, John enjoys spending quality time with his family, running, playing squash, and boating.
