Mary G. Commander

Mary G. Commander has dedicated her legal career to serving clients in Norfolk, Virginia, and surrounding areas since 1981. She is highly regarded in the Hampton Roads region for her expertise in Family Law and her straightforward approach in court. Beyond her legal practice, she is a certified Norfolk Master Gardener Volunteer and actively participates in rescuing former racing greyhounds, with two of her own at home.

Mary Commander's Education & Experience:
Ms. Commander graduated magna cum laude from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where she was an elected member of the University Senate for three years. She earned her law degree with honors from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1981. During her time at law school, she contributed to the Law Review Staff, participated in the Moot Court Board, and was a member of the McNeill Law Society. Her articles were also published in the University of Richmond Law Review.

After law school, Ms. Commander completed a one-year judicial clerkship with The Honorable John A. MacKenzie, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in Norfolk. For 18 years, she served as an Administrative Hearing Officer for the State of Virginia, handling employee grievances and terminations. Additionally, she spent seven years as a substitute judge in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts and General District Courts throughout the Hampton Roads area.
