Growing up on Badger Mountain in Eastern Washington, Dean Ralph Brett was surrounded by books despite the absence of modern amenities like TV and electricity. His early passion for reading and advocacy was recognized by his father, who predicted Dean would become a lawyer for real people, not corporations.

Dean's academic journey took him from Poverty Point to Whitman College in Walla Walla, where he earned a scholarship due to his outstanding entrance exam scores. Seeking broader horizons, he attended Stanford Law School near San Francisco. While many peers joined large firms in major cities, Dean chose to return to the Pacific Northwest, driven by a desire to make a difference.
