Raised on a farm near Anamosa, Iowa, Joel's early life was shaped by his family's agricultural and healthcare professions, with no legal background in the family. After graduating from Anamosa High School, he pursued higher education at the University of Iowa, initially aspiring to become a broadcast journalist.
