Patrick Richards

Patrick Richards is a distinguished patent attorney who heads Richards Patent Law, a prominent firm in the Chicago area. The firm collaborates with individuals and businesses worldwide to prepare, file, and prosecute patents at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to founding his own firm, Patrick accumulated over eight years of experience in the intellectual property group at McDermott Will & Emery LLP's Chicago office. There, he honed his expertise in patent prosecution, counseling, opinion work, and litigation.

As a partner at McDermott, Patrick managed international patent portfolios for large corporations and small to medium-sized enterprises. His proficiency spans all phases of utility, design, and PCT patent prosecution across diverse technical fields, including mechanical, electrical, computer systems, chemical, and financial technologies.

Patrick's extensive experience includes counseling clients on patent portfolio acquisition and management, licenses, sales, and purchases, as well as joint development agreements and various patent opinions. He also advises on employment and non-compete agreements.

His representative technologies encompass computer software, medical and dental devices, plastic packaging, wireless networks, electronic control and security systems, automated advertising systems, electrolytic compositions, injection molding, machining and tooling, automotive technology, advanced materials, financial services, musical equipment, business methods, and green and sustainable technologies.

Patrick holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with honors from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Illinois and before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and is registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
