Athena Farmakis

Athena Farmakis was born and raised in the Chicagoland area. She earned her B.A. from Northwestern University and her law degree from DePaul University College of Law. With a robust career spanning over 25 years, Athena has tried 67 jury trials and numerous bench trials, particularly in complex and media-sensitive cases.

Currently practicing in Altoona, Iowa, Athena focuses on personal injury law, handling cases such as motor vehicle accidents, premises liability, product liability, construction accidents, animal attacks, negligent security, wrongful death, nursing home abuse, and medical malpractice.

Athena's extensive public service includes over 20 years as a Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney. As a former prosecutor, she was dedicated to advocating for victims of violent crimes, including homicide, sexual assault, and child abuse. Her experience also covers prosecuting weapons, narcotics, and financial crimes, contributing to her deep understanding of the litigation process.

In addition to her legal practice, Athena is actively involved in Continuing Legal Education (CLE), where she frequently serves as a speaker, lecturer, and panelist. She also has experience in real estate management, dealing with landlord/tenant disputes, tax appeals, and capital improvement projects.

Athena is committed to her community and serves as president of her 30-story high-rise condominium association in Chicago. In this role, she oversees disciplinary and mediation hearings and collaborates with association attorneys to manage legal disputes.
