Barbara Ungar

Barbara Ungar is a highly experienced solo practitioner with over three decades of legal expertise. With 21 years dedicated to private practice, she excels in criminal defense, DWI/DUI, municipal court defense, family court litigation, and appellate advocacy before the Appellate Division. Her proficiency extends to estate and probate litigation, will contests, guardianship proceedings, and residential landlord-tenant disputes.

From 1988 to 1990, Ms. Ungar served as an Assistant Essex County Counsel, focusing on mental health and hospital law. She then became a Deputy Attorney General in the Division of Criminal Justice from 1990 to 1999, where she specialized in complex narcotics, environmental civil forfeiture, and prosecutions involving white-collar crimes, labor, and fraud.

In her notable legal career, Ms. Ungar participated in the New Jersey Supreme Court case of State v. Denselbeck, addressing jury trial rights for repeat DWI offenders. She successfully argued before the Appellate Division in State v. Brian Gundy, affirming PTI admission for a gun charge, and in State v. Joseph Blanc, leading to a remand on PTI admission.

Ms. Ungar has held significant roles in the New Jersey State Bar Association, including past Chair of both the Municipal Court Practice Section and the Criminal Law Section. Currently, she is a trustee for the Women in the Profession Section and the Solo and Small Firm Section. Her professional affiliations include the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, New Jersey Association for Justice, New Jersey Women Lawyers, Middlesex County Bar Association, and the Edison Chamber of Commerce.
