Babak Akhlaghi

Babak Akhlaghi serves as the Managing Director of NovoTech Patent Firm in Washington, D.C., where he provides comprehensive patent services to clients both domestically and internationally. As a registered patent attorney, his expertise spans a wide range of technologies, including AI, machine learning, medical devices, semiconductors, and mobile applications. Babak is also the co-author of the Patent Applications Handbook, a key resource for patent professionals published annually by West Publications.

In addition to his practice, Babak contributes to academia as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland. He teaches courses on the legal aspects of entrepreneurship, with a particular focus on intellectual property and patents. His practice encompasses patent preparation and prosecution in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science, as well as advising on licensing, validity, enforceability, infringement, and patent reexaminations.

Before his current role, Babak was a Partner at McDermott Will & Emery and an Associate at Fish & Richardson, both based in Washington, D.C. His international experience includes serving as in-house counsel at Panasonic Corporation in Osaka, Japan. He has also dedicated time to pro bono work at the Landlord-Tenant Resource Center in D.C. His technical foundation is rooted in his work as a radio frequency technician.

Babak graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, where he was at the top of his class. During law school, he was an article editor for the Houston Business & Tax Law Journal. He is admitted to practice in Maryland, D.C., and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
