Jerome Buting

Jerome Buting gained national attention as one of the defense attorneys for Steven Avery, featured in the Netflix docuseries "Making a Murderer." He has represented numerous high-profile cases and is a sought-after speaker on the American criminal justice system. Mr. Buting is a shareholder at the Milwaukee area firm, BUTING, WILLIAMS & STILLING, S.C., where he dedicates his practice exclusively to criminal law, managing both trial and appellate cases. He earned his B.A. in Forensic Studies from Indiana University-Bloomington in 1978 and his J.D. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1981. He is admitted to practice in Wisconsin state and federal courts, the United States 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Active in professional organizations, Mr. Buting is a current member and past chair of the Criminal Law Section Board of Directors. He has also served as past-president of the WACDL and is a life member of the NACDL, having previously served on its board of directors. An experienced educator, Mr. Buting has instructed lawyers extensively, particularly in the application of DNA, forensic science, and expert testimony in legal proceedings.
