Darrell Lane Castle grew up in Kingsport, a quaint town in East Tennessee. He pursued higher education at East Tennessee State University (ETSU), earning a degree in history and political science. In 1970, he was commissioned as an officer in the US Marine Corps, serving four years, including a 13-month tour in Vietnam.
After his military service, Darrell returned to ETSU for graduate studies before relocating to Memphis to attend law school. He graduated from Memphis State University—now known as the University of Memphis—in 1979.
In 1984, Darrell established his private law firm, focusing on bankruptcy and personal injury cases. Over his 31-year career, he expanded his practice by founding law firms in Milwaukee, Detroit, St. Louis, and Kansas City. Having sold these firms, he now dedicates his practice exclusively to serving clients in the Mid-South.
