Find and verify a lawyer using official sources
We don't rank lawyers or sell referrals. Instead, here is every state's official attorney license search and bar-run lawyer referral service, plus a checklist for vetting anyone you are considering.

A 5-minute check before you hire anyone
- Confirm the license. Search the lawyer's name in the official state search below. Status should be active and eligible to practice.
- Look for discipline. Most bar searches show public discipline such as suspensions or reprimands, or link to it.
- Ask about experience with your type of case (car, truck, motorcycle or rideshare claims) and who will actually handle your file.
- Get the fee agreement in writing and run the numbers in our contingency fee calculator.
- Be cautious of unsolicited contact. Ethics rules in most states restrict lawyers and their agents from soliciting accident victims in person or by live phone call.
Bar-run lawyer referral services screen participating attorneys and often offer a low-cost first consultation. They are a neutral alternative to advertising-driven directories. More detail in how to choose and verify a lawyer and do I need a lawyer?
